NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Kaitlyn Mooney as well as the Coast Guard Academy women's DMR, of which Mooney is a part of, has qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mooney, who earned All-America honors during the cross country season with a fourth place finish, won the 3,000 meters at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship with a school-record time of 9:45.69 to become the program's first Coast Guard athlete to win an individual championship since 2000. She was also the Open New England Champion in the same event beating an entire field of Division I runners.
She has the third fastest time in Division III this season which is adjusted to 9:40.72 for banked track. Mooney will run 3,000 meters on Saturday at 4:45 p.m.
The DMR ran the ninth fastest time in Division III at the Tufts Last Chance Meet on Saturday. The quartet of junior Anita Green (3:41.6), sophomore Anna Beck (58.1), senior Ashlee Johnson (2:17.9) and Mooney (4:54.7) ran a school record time of 11:53.45 to finish in third place.
They will compete on Friday at 6:25 p.m CT / 7:25 p.m. ET.
For each men's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 15 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each women's individual event contested, including the pentathlon, the top 17 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition. The championships will be held March 9-10 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, with Birmingham Southern College and the Birmingham CrossPlex serving as hosts.
