NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard dropped their first home game of the season, falling to Kean 19-6 in non-conference action Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 8-2 on the season while the Cougars improve to 10-0.
Coast Guard was led by junior Carter Sanderson and freshman Mary Goins who each had two goals. Sophomore MegMarie Stanchi and freshman Luisa Santos had the other two markers while junior Anna McGoldrick, sophomore Erin Mullen and freshman Haley Howard each had an assist.
Senior Brittany Ballack and sophomore Danni LeSaint led the Cougars as they each scored a game high three goals. Junior Meghan Tillger had a game high five points with a goal and four assists while senior Emily Stasuk finished with four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Morgan Graham finished with two goals and one assist and senior Krista LaMaina scored two goals of her own.
Kean jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as LaMaina fired home her seventh goal of the season with 17:37 remaining in the first half to cap off the early run.
The lead remained six for the remainder of the opening period until Goins opened the second half with an unassisted goal to move the Bears within five at 10-5.
The Cougars, however, seized the momentum back scoring nine of the final 10 goals to secure the win and remain as one of the 10 undefeated teams left in Division III.
Senior goalie Nikki Apostolopoulo (10-0) allowed five goals and made nine saves, including six in the first half. Sophomore Josie Pagano played the final 13:14 making one save and allowing one goal.
Coast Guard is back to work on Saturday, April 7th, when they host the Springfield Pride in NEWMAC action. Opening draw is 1:00 pm.
