KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Coast Guard snapped a two game losing streak to Merchant Marine as they topped the Mariners 16-12 in non-conference action Tuesday night.
With the win the Bears improve to 5-1 while Merchant Marine falls to 3-2. The fifth win is the most by any team in program history in a single season.
Coast Guard also gains a point towards the Superintendent's Trophy increasing their lead to 6.5-3.5.
Freshman Marietta Davis had a game high six points with four goals and two assists. Freshman Brenna Farrington continued her hot start to her collegiate career scoring four goals. She leads the NEWMAC with 28 goals on the season and as of March 20th was tied for 19th in Division III in goals per game.
Senior Daria McKenna finished the game with four points on one goal and three assists while freshmen Haley McCue (two goals), Mary Goins (two goals) and Haley Howard (one goal, one assist) each had two points.
The Mariners were led by junior Jessica Reilly who had a game high five goals. Junior Jessica Reilly also finished with five points on three goals and two assists.
The Bears scored the first four goals of the game led by three goals from Farrington and another tally from Goins.
After Merchant Marine got one goal back with just over 13:30 to play in the first half, Coast Guard answered as McKenna found Davis twice in a row pushing the Bears lead to five (6-1) with 6:42 left in the opening period.
The Mariners mounted a comeback at the start of the second half scoring four of the first six goals of the half to make the score 10-6 with 19:05 left in the game.
The Bears however held Merchant Marine at bay not allowing them to get closer than four goals as Coast Guard made their early lead hold up and won their fifth game of the season 16-12.
Freshman Rebecca Dolan (4-1) ties the single season record for wins by a goalie making a career high 15 saves on 27 shots on goal. She is fourth in the conference in goals-against average (9.45).
Hannah Gizi (3-2) made seven saves on 23 shots on goals.
Coast Guard is back in action this Saturday, March 24th when they travel to Northampton, Massachusetts for their first conference game of the season against Smith. Opening draw is 1:00.
