NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Coast Guard women's lacrosse team could not overcome a slow start as they fell to Western Connecticut 12-6 in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.
With the loss the Bears fall to 2-6 on the season while the Colonials improve to 4-3.
Freshman Abigail Bradford notched her second hat trick of the season with three goals. Sophomore Daria McKenna added two points with a goal and an assist. Juniors Mim Coburn and Niki Kirchner-Hope each had a goal of their own.
Western was led by freshman Brooke Baldelli who had five goals. Junior Olivia Kosilla added five points on three goals and two assists while senior Destinee Carey had four points with three goals and one assist.
After the Colonials scored the first two goals of the game, Coast Guard answered as Bradford netter her 12th of the season with 16:25 to go in the first making the score 2-1.
Western however rattled off four consecutive goals to end opening stanza taking a 6-1 lead into the intermission.
The Bears would show some offensive spark in the second half scoring five goals including three of the final four goals of the game. The Colonials only held a one goal advantage in the second half but took home their fourth victory of the season 12-6.
Senior Hannah Delguercio (2-6) made four saves on 20 shots allowing 12 goals. She is currently second in the conference with 65 saves on the season.
Senior Missy O'Donnell made five saves on 14 shots on goal and allowed six goals.
The Coast Guard defense had their second highest caused turnover mark with 11 led by four from freshman Lydia VanWinkle. She also had a career best four ground balls.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, March 29th, when they host the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers. Opening draw is 7:00.
