HADLEY, Mass. -- The USCGA men's and women's Rowing teams enjoyed a beautiful fall day racing at the Hadley Chase.  UMass women's rowing team hosted this new regatta and by all measures the inaugural regatta was a success.  The racecourse was down a 3.1 mile section of the Connecticut River and included a large turn that provided the coxswains practice for the upcoming Head of the Charles and Head of the Schuylkill.

51 rowers raced in what was the last full squad race for the fall season.

The women raced a varsity and a novice eight as well as a varsity four against some very tough competition that was dominated by Dartmouth College and UMass – both division 1 programs.

The men raced a novice eight, three varsity eights, two varsity fours, and two singles.  It was the first time CGA has been able to race 4 eights in a long time.

Some of the highlights of the day included:

Sophomores Bradley Ragan and Jacob Brookhart raced singles in the opening race of the day with Ragan placing third and Brookhart placing sixth out of a field of 17 rowers. This was an impressive feat since they have spent all fall in eights and fours.

The men's novice eight was second and the women's novice eight was third.  These results demonstrate that the team has established some solid building blocks for the spring season. The women's novice eight only had one experienced rower in the line-up.  With a couple more races this fall and a solid spring break they be ready for the spring season.

The varsity men's eight was third in the head race and then won the 500 meter sprint that closed out the day of racing beating UMass, UConn, and Tufts to take the victory in a time of 1:17.0.  The varsity boat, led by senior captain Logan Hutson, started at 45 strokes per minute and remained at 42 or above the entire way down the 500 meter course to seal the win.

A select group of cadets will be racing at the Head of the Charles this weekend with one women's four racing on Saturday and a women's four and men's eight racing on Sunday afternoon.  The final race of the season will be in Philadelphia on October 28th.
