NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Annabella Farabaugh had a team-high 16 points to earn tournament MVP honors while Jacqueline Ward added 15 points to earn a spot on the All-tournament team as Coast Guard captured the Ed Hockenbury Classic Championship with a 59-53 win over Wellesley at Norwich University.
Coast Guard improves to 7-2 its best start since the 2013-'14 season when the Bears won seven straight to start the season and were 8-1 after nine games. Wellesley drops to 6-2 on the season.
Breanna Wood had a season-high 11 rebounds in the win for the Bears.
Caitlin Aguire had a game-high 25 points to lead Wellesley.
Coast Guard shot a season-high 48.8 percent from the field (20-41) while making 6 of 14 from 3-point range while Wellesley was 22 of 66 (33.3 percent) and made just 3 of 16 from behind the arc.
The Bears led 17-13 after the first quarter and 32-24 at halftime.
Wellesley cut the deficit to 34-32 using an 8-2 run to start the second half before the Bears answered with an 8-2 run of their own for a 42-34 lead with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Coast Guard led 46-42 after three quarters.
The Blue would get as close as 53-49 with 1:58 left before Farabaugh hit a 3-pointer with 1:37 left.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday at Mitchell at 5:00.
