CANTON, N.Y. – Emma Puddington registered her first career double-double as she had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Kyra Hartman led five Bears in double figures with a game-high 17 points leading Coast Guard to a season-opening 91-46 win over host SUNY Canton in the Kevin Fee/Roos Classic.
Coast Guard will play SUNY Potsdam, a 77-62 winner over Cazenovia in the first game on Friday, in the championship game on Saturday afternoon at 3:00.
The 45 point margin of victory was the second largest victory in the season opener in program history as the biggest rout was when Coast Guard beat Wheelock 87-31 to open the 2010-'11 season.
Hartman was 7 of 11 from the field including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Freshman Jacqueline Ward and Branyelle Carillo each scored in double figures in their collegiate debuts as Ward finished with 16 points and game-highs of seven assists and five steals while Carillo added 12 points.
Annabella Farabaugh was also in double figures for Coast Guard as she finished with 15 points while Faith Butler added eight rebounds and four steals in her first collegiate game.
Coast Guard shot 40 percent from the field in the win (36-90) while making 8 of 27 from downtown while the Roos shot 27.9 percent (17-61) and connected on 7 of 20 from 3-point range. The Bears held a 58-43 edge on the glass including 26 offensive rebounds.
The Bears scored the first 12 points of the game and led 21-5 after the first quarter and led 43-19 at halftime. Hartman and Farabaugh each had 10 points to lead the way in the first half.
Coast Guard shot 38.6 percent in the first half (17-44) making 4 of 14 from 3-point range while the Roos were 6 of 29 (20.7 percent) and made 2 of 9 from behind the arc in the opening half.
The Bears will look to open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2016-'17 season with a win tomorrow.
