Bears Fall to Bridgewater and Defeat Becker in Day Two of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla.-- Coast Guard softball split in their second day of The Spring Games in Florida. The Bears dropped to Bridgewater State in game one, 5-1 and defeated Becker 11-3 in game two. The Bears improve to 2-2 as Bridgewater improve to 2-3, and Becker drops to 0-3.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow, March 12 when they take on Webster at 9:00 AM and Ohio Wesleyan at 11:15 AM.


Junior Natalie Sorrenti went the distance in the circle to lead Bridgewater to a 5-1 victory over Coast Guard in the first game of the day.

Senior Rebecca Uschmann broke a scoreless tie with a pinch hit bases loaded single in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Shannon Grindle connected for a three-run homer in the seventh and senior Jenny Heller followed with a solo blast to break the game open.

Heller and juniors Meghan Navarro and Samantha Mulcahy each went 2-for-4 at the plate to pace Bridgewater's attack.

In the sixth with the game deadlocked at 0-0, Navarro singled to start the rally and moved to second after a walk to Grindle. Heller followed with a base hit to load the base with nobody out. A fielder's choice grounder cut down Nararro at home, but Uschmann responded with the clutch single to plate freshman pinch runner Michaela Nista with the first run of the game.

Freshman Emma Healy walked to open the seventh. After a sacrifice bunt, Navarro singled and Grindle drove a 1-0 pitch over the left-centerfield fence to give Bridgewater a 4-0 advantage. Heller made it back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to 5-0.

Junior Julia Ferris suffered the loss in the circle for Coast Guard. Sophomore Charlee Kraiss went 3-for-4 to highlight the Coast Guard offense. Kraiss doubled and scored on and RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to put the Bears on the board.


Juniors Claire Hurley and Audrey Bartz both went 3-2 with two runs each to lead Coast Guard's offense in the 11-3 victory over Becker in five innings. Courtney McKenna, Sharayah Simco, and Maggie Perez all had a pair of RBI's each.

The Bears took a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Becker got on the board in the bottom of the first when Sarah Ellis had a double with an RBI.

The Bears extended their lead by four in the top of the second. It started off with a single from Mckenna with an RBI, a Simco double, sending two runners home, and a single from Maggie Perez to right field, with another RBI as Coast Guard took a 9-1 lead.

Emily Iacovelli hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third but the Bears put the game away as Hurley walked, advancing everyone on base to get an RBI.

Sophomore Sydney Arendt pitched the full game and had four strikeouts, including two in the final inning, to end the game 11-3.
