Bears Split in Season Opener

CLERMONT, Fla.-- Coast Guard softball opened the season with a split with Westfield State and Carroll University on Sunday afternoon. The Bears defeated Westfield, 5-4 before dropping to Carroll, 6-1.

Junior Audrey Bartz was five-for-seven at the end of both games and classmate Julia Ferris struck out six batters, as she pitched the full duration of the first game against Westfield.

Westfield starts the season 0-1, and Carroll improves to 4-2 on their season with the win.

The Bears will play again tomorrow, against Bridgewater State at 9:00 AM and Becker at 11:15 AM.


Westfield took a 2-0 lead with two RBI's on a double from Caitlin Hughes.

Senior Sharayah Simco cut the deficit, putting the Bears on the board, 2-1 as she grounded out to shortstop, with an RBI at the top of the first.

The Bears took a 3-2 lead at the top of the third as McKenna advanced to second with two RBI's.

Bri Tortora hit a triple for the Owls to bring in two RBI's and tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth.

Sophomore Charlee Kraiss led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out by Courtney McKenna and scored on a passed ball to give Coast Guard a 5-4 lead at the top of the seventh.

Ferris pitched a clean inning, retiring the last three batters of the game with help from a diving catch from McKenna to end the game.


Junior Amanda Osterhus pitched 12 strikeouts and two walks to lead the Carroll University to a 6-1 victory.

Freshman Sierra Grubor went three for four and scored two runs for Carroll, which collected nine hits.
Junior Lexy Kemnitzer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run for the Pioneers. Kemnitzer drove in what proved to be the winning run on a groundout in the top of the first inning.

Senior Veronica Rodriguez,, freshman Katelyn Schneider and freshman Madison Wagner each drove in a run.

Junior Kayla Sowers drove in the lone run in the sixth for Coast Guard in the bottom of the sixth.
