NEW LONDON, Conn.-For the second time in as many Mondays Coast Guard junior Jessie Richardson has received yet another post-season accolade. The junior catcher has been named a First Team All-New England selection as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Last week Richardson was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference First Team. Earlier this season, Richardson was recognized as both the NFCA Player of the Week and NEWMAC Player of the Week.
Richardson, a catcher, had an outstanding campaign this season, ranking among the NEWMAC leaders in almost every offensive and defensive category. The Washington native led the league in doubles (14), RBI (34), and batting average (.481). She also found her way into the Top 10 in a number of other offensive categories, including; hits (2nd, 50), runs (10th, 28), triples (7th, 2), total bases (6th, 71), sac flies (2nd, 3), stolen bases (8th, 8), on-base percentage (2nd, .517), and slugging average (3rd, .683).
Defensively, Richardson was terrific as well, handling an inexperienced pitching staff masterfully on her way to a .982 fielding percentage (split between catching, left field, and second base), making just two errors on the year. She caught eight would-be base stealers (to rank 2nd in the conference) in 21 chances for an astounding 38.1% runners caught stealing percentage. She also ranked first among all full-time catchers, allowing just two passed balls on the season.
With her selection to the NFCA All-Region First Team, Richardson is now eligible to be considered for All-American honors by the NFCA. Richardson has now been selected to the All-New England team in each of her first three collegiate seasons, previously earning second team honors in both 2012 and 2013.
