Three Records Set as Bears Beat Army in National Qualifier

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Coast Guard Bears defeated Army, winning four out of five events in shoulder-to-shoulder competition at Tronsue Marksmanship Center. The Bears finished with 6375 points against Army's 6344.

The Bears received their lone loss to the Black Knights of West Point in Free Pistol. Friday night, the Black Knights of Army seeking revenge from their previous shoulder-to-shoulder defeat in October at the hands of the Bears, and shooting on their home range, shot an outstanding 2065 against the Bears 2023.

Junior Helen Oh led the Bears with an excellent 532. Close on her heels were freshman Daniel Cheon's 517, junior Brian Kim's 497, and sophomore Kevin Bennett's 477. Saturday morning, the Bears had enough of Army's success and handed the Black Knights their first loss in Air Pistol, firing an Academy record 2212 to Army's 2167.

Oh led the Bears with a 560, rounding out the Academy-record-breaking team was Cheon's 557, freshman Esther Choe's 550, and Kim's 545. Freshman Benjamin Bertsche fired a personal best in Air Pistol with a 544. The Bears continued their winning ways by defeating Army in Standard Pistol, 2140 to 2112. Oh again led the Bears firing a 547. Also firing for the Bears were Bennett firing a 533, Kim firing a 539, and Cheon firing a 521. Firing a personal best in Standard Pistol was Choe's 525.

In Women's Air Pistol, the Bears tied the Academy record firing a winning score 1091 and defeating Army's 1059. Oh led all competitors firing a 373. Choe fired a 366 and freshman D.J Corbett fired a 352 to round out the Air Pistol Team. Oh led the Women in Sport Pistol with a personal best 574 for a new Academy Record team score of 1662 against Army's 1480. Behind Oh were Choe and Corbett both firing personal bests, 546 and 542, respectively. The Bears Women defeated the Lady Black Knights in the Women's aggregate competition with a new Academy Record, 2753 to 2539. Oh was the high woman shooter for the Bears with a cumulative score of 947.

Oh led the Bears in Free 532, in Air 560, and Standard 547 as well as the high aggregate score, 1639. Close behind Oh was Cheon with a 1595 combined-aggregate score. Oh also led the Bears in both Women Air and Women Sport pistol making it a clean sweep of being the top shooter for the Bears in all five events.

The Bears Pistol Team will compete at home in two weeks to face Ohio State  and Merchant Marine on Feb. 23rd and 24th.
