DARTMOUTH, Mass. –Coast Guard could not hold on to an early 1-0 lead as they dropped their final nonconference game of the season 2-1 against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday evening.
With the loss the Bears fall to 9-4-3 on the season while the Corsairs improve to 11-5-1 overall.
The Bears did not wait long before finding the back of the net. In the 14th minute of play, senior Alex Lane took a corner kick, sending it to the far post where he found junior Austin Read who connected on a header putting it into the bottom right corner of the Corsair net for a 1-0 lead at the 13:19 mark.
In the 37th minute, the hosts tied the game, as senior Matt Vidal curled a free kick around the Bears' wall into the top left corner of the net from 20 yards out.
The Bears saw their best chance to score in the 80th minute, when both freshman Brock Hassett and sophomore Quintin Parsons sent point-blank shots on goal, but freshman Danny Andrade managed both saves before the Corsairs were able to clear the ball.
UMass Dartmouth seized back the lead for good as time ticked down. On a free kick, junior Fabio Araujo fired right outside the box and senior Stephan Teixeira redirected the ball and found the foot of Mendes, who drove home the game-winner into the bottom right corner.
Freshman Dakota Harich (3-2-1) made three saves on five shots on goal.
Andrade (3-0) made three saves on four shots on goal tallying the third win of his freshman campaign.
Coast Guard returns home to close out its regular season against Springfield College on Saturday, October 29. Kickoff is 1:00.
