NEW LONDON, Conn. – Packy Witkowski had a season-high 33 points connecting on 9 of 15 from 3-point range leading Coast Guard to an 80-69 win over archrival Merchant Marine in the Bears final game of the first semester.
Coast Guard evens its record a 4-4 on the season while the Mariners drop to 3-4 and the Bears win yet another point for the 2019-'20 Superintendent's Trophy taking a 6-1 lead heading into the second semester.
Witkowski had 17 points on 5 of 8 from behind the arc in the first half while making 4 of 7 from 3-point range and scoring 16 points in the second half. Witkowski was one trey shy of his own school record of 10 set last year in a win over Conn. College.
Jason Frazer added 18 points as he made 5 of 11 from 3-point range as the Bears tied a season-high with 15 3-pointers. Noah Baldez led the Bears with a game-high eight rebounds and five assists as Coast Guard held a 38-26 edge on the glass in the win.
James Walsh led the Mariners with 16 points while Blaine McDonough added 14 points. McDonough and Isaiah Nix had five rebounds each to lead Merchant Marine.
Coast Guard used an 8-0 run to take a 21-13 lead on a layup by Garrett Drummond with 10:09 left in the first half. The Bears led 29-18 with 5:50 left before a 7-2 spurt pushed the lead to 36-20 with 3:23 left. Coast Guard led 42-26 at the half.
The Mariners closed the gap to 49-40 with 14:52 left, but Frazer hit back-to-back treys before Witkowski connected from deep as the Bears took control 58-40 with 12:32 left and never looked back.
Coast Guard was 28 of 63 from the field (44.4 percent) while making 15 of 37 (40.5 percent) from behind the arc. The Mariners shot 52.9 percent (27 of 51) while making 4 of 13 from 3-point range.
The Bears are off until the new year when they travel to York College (Pa.) for the Spartan Classic on January 4th and 5th.
