MIT TD in Final Minute Downs Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Ashton Robinson's 11 yard touchdown run with 54 seconds left lifted MIT to a 22-16 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic (NEWMAC) game on Parents' Weekend at the Academy.

Coast Guard had overcame a 16-3 deficit to tie the game with 2:43 left, before a fumbled punt with 1:44 left at the Coast Guard 17 set up the game winning touchdown. It was the Bears first lost fumble of the season.

MIT improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

Justin Moffatt became just the second receiver in Coast Guard program history to go over the 2,000 yard mark as he have game-highs of seven receptions for 116 yards to finish the game with 2,002 career receiving yards second to only Christian Lee ('93-'96), who has an Academy record 2,356 yards.

Ryan Jones was 15 of 25 for 171 yards and rushed for a team-high 66 yards in the loss.

MIT quarterback Chris Mauck was 14 of 23 for 116 yards with a touchdown while Robinson led the Engineers with 23 carries for 78 yards and the game winning touchdown. Keithen Shepard led MIT with six receptions for 64 yards.

Mauck's 1 yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left in the third quarter gave MIT a 16-3 lead.

Chris Gardner's 2 yard run with 13:06 left capped a five play, 77 yard drive and cut the deficit to 16-9, the extra point was blocked by CJ Reilly. The big play in the drive was a 51 yard pass from Jones to Moffatt.

Coast Guard would pull even on a 1 yard run by Jones on 4th and one and Crowley's extra point with 2:43 left. The big play in this drive was a 62 yard run up the middle by Jones.

The Coast Guard defense got a stop and it appeared the game would be heading into overtime before the fumbled punt set up MIT at the Bear 17 with 1:44 left. Robinson scored the game winner on 3rd and four and the PAT was missed with 54 seconds left.

The Bears would move the ball to the MIT 49 on a 30 yard reception by Moffatt, but that would be as close as Coast Guard would get turning it over on downs with 11 seconds left.

MIT go on the board on a 28 yard field goal by Mark Wright with 5:17 left in the first quarter and Mauck threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Shepard with 13:33 left. The extra point was missed and the Engineers took a 9-0 lead into the half.

Coast Guard had just 86 yards of offense in the first half while MIT had 178 first half yards.

The Bears would finish with 310 yards, 171 passing and 139 rushing while MIT had 283 yards (116 passing and 167 rushing).

Sean Kent led MIT with 10 tackles, nine solo while Eugene Bizer had a game-high 13 tackles in the loss for the Bears.

Coast Guard has an off week and returns to action on Nov. 9th at WPI in a NEWMAC game at noon.
