NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Justin Silvestro doubled, hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs while sophomore Jimmy Gowen allowed just one run on five hits over six innings leading Wheaton to its six straight win, a 12-1 victory over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
The Lyons improve to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play while Coast Guard saw its three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 11-14 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.
Silvestro, who was 3 for 4 with three runs scored, hit a two-run homer to center in the fourth and a solo shot to right field in the sixth while also lacing a double to left in the first inning.
Gowen (2-1) did not walk a batter and struck out one to pick up the win while three relievers held the Bears to just two singles with one walk and six strikeouts.
Junior Luke Sniatkowski (1-4) went the first four innings for the Bears and took the loss.
Wheaton took the lead in the top of the first on an unearned run as senior Matt Lavanchy reached an error and later scored on a passed ball.
The Lyons scored three times in the third scoring on a wild pitch, RBI ground out by freshman Tyler Walsh and an error for a 4-0 lead.
Wheaton added four more in the fourth, scoring a run on a error before and RBI single by Lavanchy and finally Silvestro belted a two-run homer to make the score 8-0.
Silvestro added a solo shot in the sixth for a 9-0 lead.
The Bears got their only run in the seventh as sophomore Zach Serna singled and later scored on an RBI single by sophomore Tucker Williams.
Wheaton added three in the ninth on an RBI ground out by freshman Jimmy Gianquitti and a two-run single by classmate Willy Boyd to close the scoring.
Junior Zachary Goodwin-Boyd added a pair of hits and stole two bases for the Lyons.
Serna led the Bears with two hits in the loss.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday in the first of a three-game NEWMAC series at WPI at 3:30.
