Mooney Wins New England Championship

GORHMAN, Maine – Freshman Kaitlyn Mooney smashed her own school record on her way to winning the NCAA Division III New England Championship and leading the women's cross country team to a 13th place finish Saturday afternoon.

Mooney ran 20:22 to beat senior Nicky Roberts of Amherst by nine seconds and punch her ticket to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Her time beats her own school record by over a minute. Mooney has won five of her first six collegiate races and owns not only the 6K school record but the 5K school record as well.

Coast Guard scored 401 points as a team for 13th place. MIT won the meet with 58 points followed by Tufts in second with 92.

Junior Anita Green was second runner across the line for the Bears finishing in 55th place (22:35). Green was followed by senior Rachel Burchill who finished off her Coast Guard career with a time of 23:11.5 (87th place).

Junior Nina Ragle was the fourth finisher for the team coming across the line in 117th place (23:38.8) followed by sophomore Kirsten Carson in 142nd place (23:54.4).

Rounding out the top seven for Coast Guard was sophomore Olivia Suski (149th place, 23:57.9) and freshman Mia Huncharek  (231st place, 25:05).

Next Saturday, November 18th, Mooney will head to Elsah, Illinois to compete in the 2017 Division III National Championship.
