Bears Take Two on Saturday

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard (7-5, 1-1) went 2-0 on the day earning their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season topping Clark, 26-24, 25-22, 14-25, 19-25, 15-6 and then beating Endicott 3-1, (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17).

Match One: Coast Guard 3 Clark 2 (26-24, 25-22, 14-25, 19-25, 15-6)

Freshman Angelou Dunton led the Bears hitting .389 with a match high 25 kills and 14 digs. Junior Emma Saunders hit a career best .520 with 14 kills. Junior Michelle McGill tallied 17 digs while freshman Makenna Martin had a career high 51 assists.
The Cougars were led by junior Marina Ramos who had 16 kills and 14 digs while junior Jacqueline Jimenez-Maldonado hit .357 with 13 kills. Senior Mia Cattaneo had 16 digs and senior Savannah Sanford added 11 digs.

In the first set, Coast Guard found themselves down six points midway through at 13-7 after a kill by Clark sophomore Ana Mercado.

The Bears managed to score the next five to get within one at 13-12 after two kills by Dunton and another by senior Susan West.
After an ace by McGill, the Cougars scored four straight points to go back up 21-18. Ramos added two aces over this stretch.
The Bears completed their comeback with an 8-3 run capped off by a kill by freshman Alex Kempf for a 26-24 first set win. Dunton had two kills while junior Madison Scott had a kill and two aces.
In the second set Clark once again jumped out to an early three point lead at 10-7 after an attack error by Dunton.
Coast Guard climbed back into the match at 10-10 after two consecutive kills by Dunton.

The second set continued to be neck and neck until the Bears, down 22-20, went on a 5-0 run to finish the second set and take a 2-0 lead. Saunders and Dunton each had two kills during this stretch.

The Cougars did not go away quietly as they took the next two sets 25-14 and 25-19. Clark used big runs in both sets as they closed out the third 17-4 and the fourth 10-3.

In the final set Coast Guard fired out and never looked back winning 13-6 and earning their first conference win of the season and their first win against the Cougars since the 2014 season when the Bears beat them 3-2.

Match Two: Coast Guard 3 Endicott 1 (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17)

 Saunders once again had a strong game for the Bears hitting .407 with 14 kills while freshman Alexi Deane hit .412 with a career best 10 digs. Junior Michelle McGill and sophomore Hailye Reynolds had 10 digs, while Reynolds added 18 assists. Freshman Makenna Martin had a match high 26 assists.

Endicott was led by senior Tori McIntyre who had 14 kills and 11 digs while sophomore Emma Mancini had 10 digs. Freshman Zoey Gifford added 21 assists while freshman Mackenzie Kennedy had 10 digs.
In the first set Coast Guard closed out on a 5-0 run led by three aces by senior Susan West winning 25-20.
The Bears used a 7-2 run to come back from a two point deficit to take the second set 25-22. Saunders had two kills while Deane had a kill and an ace.
The Gulls snagged the third set before Coast Guard dominated the fourth set winning 25-17 and finishing off the 2-0 day.
The Bears continue their NEWMAC schedule on Tuesday, September 20th when they travel to Smith for their second conference game of the season. Match starts at 7:00 pm.
