WILLIMANTIC, CONN. – Host Eastern Connecticut outlasted Coast Guard 3-2 in a marathon match between the two Connecticut schools.
The Warriors rallied down 2-1 and won by set scores of 18-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13 to improve to 5-1 on the season while the Bears dropped to 2-3 overall.
Adrianna Mihalek, Kay Mullen and Carly Balskus combined for 37 kills to lead Eastern Connecticut.
Angelou Dunto led Coast Guard with 16 kills and 19 digs, Susan West adding 14 kills. Hailye Reynolds had 41 assists for the Bears while Ali Gates added 16 digs.
Coast Guard jumped to a quick lead in the opening set and led by as many as ten at 20-10. Eastern would close to within five at 23-18 before the Bears scored the final two points for the win.
The Warriors used 6-2 spurt to open up a 14-9 lead and never looked back enroute to the 25-17 win in set two.
The Bears would use a 7-2 run in the third to take control 21-13 before winning 25-19.
In the fourth set, Coast Guard led 14-10 before the Warriors scored ten of the next 12 to take a 20-16 lead. The Bears scored five of the next seven to pull to within 22-21. Eastern would hold on for a 25-23 win to force a fifth set.
It was a back-and-forth fifth set in which Coast Guard led 11-8 before the Warriors ran off four straight for a 12-11 lead. Coast Guard led 13-12 before Eastern scored the final three points to complete the come from behind win.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host archrival Merchant Marine at noon.
