NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mike Bynon has been named the head coach of the Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team following a national search.
"It's my distinct pleasure to welcome Mike Bynon to the Coast Guard Academy athletics family," said Tim Fitzpatrick, Coast Guard Academy Director of Athletics." "We conducted a very thorough, focused search process and Mike emerged from a very talented field of finalists as the clear choice for this opportunity. Mike brings a diverse mix of talent and experience to CGA – as a player, he was an All-America selection who played on three Final Four teams at Carthage College. Once he transitioned over to coaching, he was a big part of a very successful women's program at Williams that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen (2013) and Elite Eight (2014) during his tenure. What stands out the most, however, is Mike's desire to be at Coast Guard, and to take our program to the next level in terms of competitive success – and I have every confidence that he will get us there."
Bynon was an assistant at Williams College for past two seasons as the Ephs posted a record of 55-10 including a record of 24-2 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matches and won a pair of NESCAC championships earning back-to-back NCAA tournament berths. The Ephs advanced to the Elite 8 last season and the Sweet 16 in 2013.
"I would first like to thank Tim Fitzpatrick and the search committee for selecting me to take over the Coast Guard volleyball program," said Bynon. " I am very honored to be working at such an incredible place such as the United States Coast Guard Academy. Coast Guard volleyball has a long history of success, and I look forward to working with the current players and bringing in a new wave of talent to continue in that same direction."
A graduate of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Bynon was the libero for a team which made three NCAA Final Four appearances and played in the inaugural NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship Game in 2012. He earned second team AVCA All-America honors in 2012 and is the all-time leader in digs at Carthage.
Upon graduation, he served as a graduate assistant for both the men's and women's teams at his alma mater before moving onto Williams.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a minor in Health and he is currently completing his Master's Degree in Education with a focus on Physical Education and Health at MCLA.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT MIKE BYNON
Gary Williams, Director of Athletics & Recreation at Wittenberg University
"Mike is a tremendous young coach who will bring energy, enthusiasm, character, and a commitment to excellence that will make an immediate impact on his women and the athletic department. As one of his mentors, I could not be prouder of him and cannot wait to see what he and his team will accomplish in the coming years."
Christi Kesley, Head women's volleyball at Williams College
"Mike has been a tremendous addition to our volleyball family these past two years here at Williams. We are going to miss him but he is ready to take the next step in his career as a head coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy. I believe Mike is one of the promising up and coming coaches in our sport. He is truly passionate about volleyball and continues to be driven to learn and grow in this sport on a daily basis. Most importantly though Mike genuinely cares about being a great teacher and mentor to his student-athletes both on and off the court. He really takes the time to understand his players and will work hard to help them navigate and balance their desire to excel on court, in the classroom and in all of the other opportunities at the academy.
"Mike is a very humble yet driven person which will serve him well as he looks to take the Coast Guard volleyball program to the next level. I am extremely proud of Mike and look forward to following his progress with this incredible opportunity as the next head coach at Coast Guard."
