WALTHAM, Mass. – Coast Guard split a pair of matches at the Brandeis Invitational as the Bears beat host Brandeis 3-0 before suffering their first loss of the season 3-1 to Trinity.
Coast Guard beat host Brandeis 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-5) in the first match of night as sophomore Susan West had a match-high 11 kills to go with three blocks while junior Ashley Dumont added seven kills and four blocks. Junior Maggie Hine had 17 assists and eight digs to lead the Bears.
Brandeis jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening game would first tie the set at 15-15. Brandeis led 17-16 before Coast Guard scored six of the next eight points for a 22-19 lead and they held on for a 25-21 win.
In the second game, the Bears led 18-14 and had set point at 24-20 before the Judges fought off four straight game points to tie the score 24-24. With the scored tied 25-25 the Bears got kills from West and freshman Summer Adams to win 27-25.
Coast Guard jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the third game and cruised to the 25-5 win.
In the second match of the night the Bears had their four-match win streak snapped and dropped to 4-1 on the young season as Trinity won 3-1 (25-19, 12-25, 25-22, 25-22).
Dumont led the Bears with 11 kills and four blocks while West hit .310 with 23 digs, two aces and two blocks. Hine had 37 assists, 17 digs and five kills while freshman Michelle McGill led the way with 32 digs.
"Tonight as a whole was a battle and there were definitely some highs and lows," said Coast Guard head coach Aylene Ilkson. "Our young freshman Summer Adams showed a lot of promise and we continue to see a ton of potential from our whole team."
The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they play Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and Williams at 4 p.m. at the Brandeis Invitational.
