NEW LONDON, Conn.—Coast Guard senior co-captains Kelsey DePorto and Samantha Marmolejo have been selected to participate in The New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Senior Classic on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
The game will feature New England's top 32 Division III senior volleyball players and the annual event features the area's top seniors competing in various skills competitions leading up to the afternoon's all-star match.
In addition to the Senior Classic invite, DePorto was named to the NEWVA All-New England honorable mention team for the second straight season. This is the fourth consecutive season DePorto has been honored by NEWVA. She was named to the All-Rookie Team, second team, and Rookie of the Year in 2010, and earned second team honors in 2011.
DePorto, a middle blocker, led the NEWMAC with 419 kills this season and led the Bears with 87 blocks. She and finished her career as the Bears all-time leader with 461 games played, second in blocks (447), and fourth in kills (1,323) as she earned first team All-NEWMAC honors for the fourth straight season.
Marmolejo, the Bears libero, led the NEWMAC with 518 digs and earned All-conference honors for the first time in her career. She finishes as the Bears all-time leader with 1,775 digs and she ranks second with 454 games played.
Over their four years at the Academy, the duo, the only two seniors on the team this season, led the Bears to a record of 96-35. They were part of a Bears team that won a share of the NEWMAC regular season championship and an ECAC Championship in 2011 after winning the NEWMAC Tournament and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
Coast Guard finished 22-9 this season advancing to the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament for the 13th straight season.
