Muller Leads Bears Past Emerson

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Freshman Rebekah Muller had a career-high 16 kills to go with 14 digs while classmate Susan West added 13 kills leading Coast Guard to a thrilling come-from-behind 3-1 win over Emerson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard dropped the first game 27-25 before winning 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 to improve to 19-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play while Emerson had its three-match win streak snapped and dropped to 15-10 overall and 3-5 in the NEWMAC.

Emerson led 24-22 in the opener before the Bears fought off a pair of game points to pull even 24-24. With the score tied 25-25, the Lions scored back-to-back points to win the first game.

The Bears evened things with a 25-20 win in game two by scoring six straight to erase an early 5-3 deficit taking a 9-5 lead. The Bears pushed the lead to 17-10 before winning the game.


In the third game, the Bears raced out to an 8-3 lead. The Lions got as close as 11-9 before Coast Guard scored six of the next eight en route to the 25-17 win.

Coast Guard trailed 20-18 in the fourth game, but scored four of the win five points to close out the match.

Sophomore Ashley Dumont led the way hitting .474 and finishing with nine kills. Sophomore Maggie Hine led the way with 48 assists and 21 digs while classmate Kelsey Hickle finished with 11 digs in the win.

Senior Alyssa Thorne led the Lions with 17 kills while freshman Julianna Augustine added 15 kills and junior Kate Rice finished with 12 kills for Emerson. Senior Jamie Morgan had a match-high 23 digs for the Lions while sophomore Juilana Tucker finished with 13 digs.

Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when the Bears host New London rival Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
