Bears to Host DIG PINK Game; Honor Johann

The Coast Guard Academy volleyball team will host a DIG PINK game on Thursday night vs. Roger Williams at 7 p.m.

DIG PINK is to honor those who have survived cancer, those who are currently fighting it and those who will experience it.

Coast Guard will wear special pink uniforms for the match. Please come out and show your support for all of the organizations that are helping bring awareness, diagnoses and care for cancer patients.

The volleyball team will dedicate the match to former Coast Guard volleyball player, Lieutenant Katie Johann Ryan ('03), who passed away on Sept. 22nd after her battle with cancer.

Katie Johann, when she played at the Academy, was a two-sport athlete at the Coast Guard Academy, playing both volleyball and basketball. She was a first team All-New England selection and a three-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in volleyball leading the Bears to the 2002 ECAC Division III North Championship. She holds the single-season record with 632 kills and 85 aces both set in the 2002 season and she is second all-time with 1,747 kills. Johann, was also a four-year member of the basketball team and played in 95 games, which is ninth all-time.
