NEW LONDON, N.H.— Junior Kelsey DePorto led the Bears with 16 kills to go with five digs while senior Keriann Mason had 12 kills and 14 digs as Coast Guard won its first match of the season with a 3-1 win over Colby Sawyer in a non-conference game.
The Bears (1-4), who lost four matches this past weekend at the Elmhurst Invitational, three of which were ranked in the top 15 nationally, won 25-18, 26-28, 25-16, 25-20.
In the first set, Coast Guard scored seven straight points to break an 8-8 tie en route to a 25-18 win. Senior Keriann Mason served six straight points in the 7-0 run for the Bears.
The Chargers took an early 7-5 lead in the second set and still led 21-19 before Coast Guard ran off three straight for a 22-21 lead. Coast Guard had a set point leading 24-23, but Colby Sawyer fought it off and had its own set point at 25-24 before back-to-back points gave the Bears a 26-25 edge. The Chargers scored the final three points to even the match with a 28-26 win.
The Bears jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the third set and rolled to a 25-16 win.
Colby Sawyer (1-4) led 10-5 in the fourth set, but Coast Guard used a 8-3 run to tie the set at 13-13. The Bears scored three straight turning a 15-15 tie into an 18-15 edge and never looked back wrapping up the win with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Junior Samantha Marmolejo led Coast Guard with 21 digs while freshman Emily Gilland had a team high 22 assists and classmate Maggie Hine added 18 assists.
