Bears Named Top-Seed in ECAC Tournament

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/7/11)--Coast Guard, which reached the semifinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament for the 11th straight season, has been selected as the top seed in the ECAC New England Division III Tournament.

Coast Guard is making its tenth postseason appearance in the last 11 seasons and eighth trip to the ECAC tournament since 2001. The Bears, won the ECAC North Championship in 2002 and the ECAC New England Championship in 2005 and 2009.

The Bears will host eighth-seeded Framingham State in the first round on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Rams (19-13) were 5-1 and placed second in the Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC) regular season and lost to third-seeded Worcester State 3-2 in the MASCAC tournament semifinals.

Coast Guard is a perfect 10-0 at home this season.

Second-seeded Plymouth State will host #7 Western New England, third-seeded Endicott will host #6 Emmanuel and fourth-seeded Keene State will host fifth-seeded Salve Regina in the other first round matchups.

Coast Guard, regular season co-champions in the NEWMAC, are 23-6 overall while going 8-1 in conference play.

If the Bears beat Framingham State on Wednesday, they will host the semifinals and championship match on Saturday.

Sophomore Kelsey DePorto leads the team with 292 kills and 101 blocks while junior Keriann Mason is second with 277 kills and 334 digs.

Junior Catherine Walker is second on the team with 48 blocks to go with her 241 kills while junior Karen Matic leads the team with 850 assists to go with 227 digs.
