DePorto Named NEWMAC Player of the Week

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/31/11)--Coast Guard Academy sophomore Kelsey DePorto has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Volleyball Player of the Week as the Bears won both matches during the week to secure a share of the regular season championship, the second-seed, and a first round bye in the NEWMAC tournament while running their win streak to nine.

Coast Guard, which improved to 23-5 overall and finished 8-1 in conference play tied for first with Springfield, wins the award for the second straight week and third time this season as junior Karen Matic won the award last week while classmate Keriann Mason won the award on Sept. 5th.

DePorto and the Bears stared the week with a 3-0 win at Wellesley, the teams entered in a three-way tie for first. Coast Guard became the first team to sweep the Blue all season. DePorto led the way with 13 kills while hitting at a .522 clip in the win.

The Bears closed out the week and the regular season with a thrilling 3-2 home win over MIT on Saturday to finish a perfect 10-0 at home this year. DePorto had ten kills and two aces in the win.

For the week, DePorto hit 47.6 percent leading the Bears with 22 kills and six blocks to go with 14 digs and two aces.

DePorto, a NEWMAC Player of the Year Candidate, leads the team with 284 kills and 98 blocks to go with 29 aces.

Coast Guard will take on the winner of the first round match between third-seeded Wellesley and sixth-seeded Babson on Saturday at 3:30 at top-seeded Springfield. The championship match will be on Sunday at 1:00 at Springfield.

Last season, second-seeded Coast Guard upset top-seeded and host Springfield 3-1 in the NEWMAC tournament championship match to earn the program's second NEWMAC tournament championship and fifth NCAA tournament appearance.
