MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Coast Guard scored another point in the race for the Superintendent's Cup topping Merchant Marine at the Wesleyan Invitational Saturday.
Combined with the men's point on the same day the Bears now lead the Mariners 7.5-3.5.
For the second week in a row junior Gabrielle Troise won the shot put with a throw of 40-9.50. Last weekend Troise set the school record in the shot with a throw of 42-2.25.
Freshman Adora Lawrence also finished in first place for Coast Guard winning the 600 in 1:42.15 beating the next closest person by over two seconds.
Sophomore Morgan Garrett was second in the 800 running 2:26.22 qualifying her for the New England Division III Championship.
Other top finishers on the track for the Bears were junior Rachel Burchill who was third in the 5K (19:34.97) while freshman Brandee Schiller crossed the line in sixth place (20:30.25). Sophomore Caroline Jenkins once again made the finals in the 60 meter hurdles finishing in fifth place in 9.80 while freshman Anna Beck was also in fifth in 1:00.15 in the 400.
In the relays Coast Guard was the top team in the 4x400 (4:16.75) while they were second in the 4x800 (10:07.13). The members of the 4x400 were freshman Madeline Colwell, junior Alexandra Cobb, Jenkins and freshman Abigail Ferrara while 4x800 was comprised of Lawrence, Garrett and freshmen Olivia Suski and Kirsten Carson.
The Bears had a number of other top performances in the field events as sophomore Kristina Bynum was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15-09 and freshman Mary Sims was seventh in the triple jump (29-01). Junior Alexia Troise was seventh in the shot put with a throw of 35-3.75.
Coast Guard is back in action next weekend, February 4, at the Dave Hemery Invitational hosted by Boston University and the Gordon Kelly Invitational hosted by MIT.
