Coast Guard Wins Opening Season Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Coast Guard women's indoor track and field team won 11 events on their way to an opening season victory at the Coast Guard Academy Winter Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Bears scored 164 points for first while Rhode Island College was second with 83 points and Eastern Connecticut rounded out the places scoring 79 points for third.

Juniors Gabrielle and Alexia Troise both took home a first and a second as Gabrielle was first in the shot put 39'2.25" and second in the weight throw (45'9") while her sister Alexia flip flopped with her taking first in the weight throw (45'9") and second in the shot put (37'.5").

Freshmen also made a splash in their first meet as Anna Beck was first in the 200 (27.75) and second in the 55 (7.69). Adora Lawrence was first in the 600 and Olivia Suski won the 1000 in 3:25.13. 

Junior Ashlee Johnson took the top spot in the 800 (2:27.48) while sophomore Anita Green led a 1-2 sweep in the mile crossing the line first in 5:27.09 followed by freshman Kirsten Carson (5:47.71).

Senior Bonny Turnage continued the distance domination winning the 3000 in 11:05.74 while sophomore Caroline Jenkins took first in the 55 meter hurdles (9.37). 

Two other newcomers took second place finishes to start their career as sophomore Kristina Bynum was second in the long jump (15'6.25") and freshman Mary Sims was second in the triple jump (30'8.5").

Both relays the Bears entered took first place with the 4x400 running 4:18.95 and the 4x800 crossing the line in 10:33.24.

Coast Guard is back in action next weekend at the Springfield Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
