SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Coast Guard throwers won three of four field events and the Bears 4x400 also earned a first place finish as the women's track & field team finished in third place in a quad meet with WPI, Springfield and Mount Holyoke.
Coast Guard scored 104 points while WPI was first with 145 and Springfield was second with 119 ad Mount Holyoke was fourth with 22.
Junior Caitlin Piker started off the 1-2-3 sweep in the javelin with a heave of 121-1, good enough for first place.
Senior Tara Larkin earned two second place finishes for the Bears, taking second in the javelin (105-6)and second in the shot put (36-10.25).
In other field events, senior Monet Masters was second in the pole vault clearing 10-6.
On the track the 4x400 team of sophomores Ashlee Johnson and Alexandra Cobb, junior Jennifer Haley and freshman Molly Yuan won a close race with WPI, beating them by just over two seconds, finishing in 4:18.21.
Other top finishers on the track was senior Madison Ahlers taking second in the 400 (1:01.08) and Johnson also taking second in the 800 (2:23.51). Freshman Anita Green crossed the line in 5:15.19 for third in the 1500 and junior Bonny Turnage and senior Jessica Mulroy were 2-3 in the 5K running 18:16.61 and 18:29.23 respectively.
Coast Guard is back in action next weekend as half the team will travel back to Springfield for the Springfield College Invitational while the other half will be headed to Princeton for the highly competitive Larry Ellis Invitational.
