NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Kristen Young won three individual events and was part of a winning relay team as Coast Guard easily beat archrival Merchant Marine 198-101 in the final home meet of the season.
Young won the 100 freestyle (54.82), the 200 freestyle (1:58.29) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.69) as the Bears picked up an important point in the Superintendent's Trophy standings and with the men's team also beating the Mariners, Coast Guard now leads 5.5-3.5 this season over Merchant Marine.
The Bears 400 medley relay team of sophomores Sam Kenis, Addy Rutkoske, Cece Marzinsky and Young won with a time of 4:08.54.
Kenis won the 100 backstroke (1:02.49) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.22) while Rutkoske won both the 100 breaststroke (1:12.16) and the 200 breaststroke (2:35.28) for the Bears.
Also for Coast Guard, Marzinsky won the 200 butterfly (2:13.33), junior Jackie Kokomoor won the 50 freestyle (25.45), sophomore Brooke Harkrader won the 500 freestyle (5:30.89) and the 400 freestyle relay of sophomore Christine McCulla, Kokomoor, Harkrader and freshman Brigit Jogan won with a time of 3:47.91.
McCulla was second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:27.48), freshman Catherine Burns finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:25.01), Kokomoor was second in the 100 freestyle (55.72), Marzinsky was second in the 200 IM (2:19.90) and Jogan was second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.12)
The Bears, who improve to 3-5 in dual meets this season, are back in action on January 21st at Clark at 1:00.
