NEW LONDON, Conn.-Junior Sara Cantrell won a pair of events while classmate Darlene Sao won one and placed second in a pair of others but it wasn't enough as Conn. College rolled to a 200-80 victory over the Coast Guard women's swimming and diving team on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Bears to 1-5 on the season.
Cantrell won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events with finals scores of 236.17 and 280.72, respectively. Sao won the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.95 and came second in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, finishing in times of 1:58.74 and 56.21, respectively.
Senior Chantel Ferguson and freshman Carlie Gilligan each took home a second and a third place finishing. Ferguson was first runner-up in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.10 and came third in the 200 butterfly finishing in 2:17.45. Gilligan placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.24, finishing just ahead of junior teammate Kelsey Gray (1:13.53). Gilligan also picked up a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in a time of 2:33.60.
The Bears 400 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams each took home third place finishes on the afternoon. The 400 medley relay team of Sao, Gray, Ferguson, and sophomore Patti Eidenire finished in 4:12.70 while the 200 freestyle relay quartet of Eidenire, freshman Rachel Seaman, Gray, and Ferguson completed their race in 1:44.64.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, December 7th and 8th when they take part in the WPI Winter Invite.
