DUDLEY, Mass - In their second overtime game in as many contests, Coast Guard pulled out the victory as freshman Vallerie Hines scored her first collegiate goal in the second overtime leading the Bears to a 2-1 victory over Nichols.
With the win, Coast Guard improves to 1-0-1 on the season while the Bison drop to 0-3 on the season. This is the second year in a row that the Bears topped Nichols in overtime as then junior Terry Netusil scored a goal in the first overtime for the 1-0 victory in 2015.
The Bears looked dominant through the first half as they out shot Nichols 15-2, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal, but the game was still tied at one.
Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead early in the second half as junior Gabby Auzenbergs played a through ball to senior Katie Clark into the Bison's penalty box. Clark ripped a shot to the lower right corner past sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Downey for her first goal of the season and the first of her career.
Nichols answered in the 80th minute to force the game to overtime as junior Taylor Souza slid senior Brooke Maher in behind the Bear's defense. Maher took two touches and then knocked a shot past sophomore Rachel Boohar for her first goal of the season.
Neither team could break the dead lock in the first overtime, but in the second overtime Auzenbergs took a shot that was blocked by the Bison's defense. Off the block, Hines met the rebound and headed it into the back of the net for the game winner and Coast Guard's first win of the season.
Boohar (1-0-1) made three saves on four shots on goal. With the win, Boohar moves into fourth all time with seven career wins breaking a tie between her and Trish Ohle ('06-'08). Next on the list is Holly Moore ('12-'14) with 13 wins.
Downey (0-3-0) made a career high 23 saves on 25 shots on goal. Her previous career high was 11 saves against Albertus Magnus in a 3-1 loss last season.
The Bear's are back in action this weekend as they travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia for the Mary Washington Classic. They will play the host on Saturday, September 10 at 12:30 pm. On Sunday, September 11 Coast Guard will take on Randolph Macon at 12:30 as well.
