Women's Soccer Falls 4-0 to No. 7 Wheaton
NEW LONDON, CT. – Julia Cipriano and Lauren Mankowski each scored goals in the first half leading Wheaton College to a 4-0 win over Coast Guard in NEWMAC conference play. The win was the Lyons sixth straight shutout and eighth consecutive win.
The Lyons, who were ranked seventh in the country and first in New England in the latest polls, improve their overall record to 13-0-2 and 6-0 in conference play. The Bears have dropped three straight and fall to 2-10 on the season and 0-6 in the NEWMAC.
Cipriano opened up the scoring in the 20th minute securing a loose ball and tucking her shot into the right side of the net from just inside the top of the box. The goal was Cipriano's sixth of the season.
The Lyons tacked on another one 13 minutes later giving them a 2-0 lead. Junior Kristina Braga had her shot ricochet off the nearside post, but Mankowski was there for the rebound, netting her first goal of the season.
Wheaton kept up their pressure early after the break netting their third goal of the game just 47 seconds into the second half as sophomore Gabriella Verde put home her fourth of the season.
Sophomore Lauren Corigliano finished up the scoring for Wheaton as she put home a shot from the right side of the box in the 57th minute. The goal was Corigliano's team leading 8th of the season.
The Bears had a couple scoring opportunities in the 81st minute as junior defender Judy Hooymans sent two consecutive free kicks into the box, forcing Wheaton keeper Lauren Thacker to make two saves battling the bright sun.
Coast Guard keeper Devin Fellman made eight saves for the Bears while Thacker made three stops for the Lyons.
Both teams return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 16th for more NEWMAC action. Coast Guard travels to Springfield College for a 7:00p kickoff while the Lyons will play host to MIT at 3:30p.
