NEW LONDON, CT. – The Bears opened up the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference schedule with a 2-1 loss to Wellesley College this afternoon.
The Blue got the scoring going early when senior co-captain, Gayron Berman lofted a shot into the upper right corner to give Wellesley a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute. Just four minutes later it was the other co-captain, senior Kara Lungmus, who received a pass from Bermin as she entered the left side of the box and chipped a shot over Coast Guard goalie, Devin Fellman.
Coast Guard cut the score in half in the 71st minute when freshman Madison Ahlers took a pass from junior Jill Kelly and slipped a shot by Wellesley keeper, Claire Cerda. The goal was Ahlers first goal of her career.
Coast Guard had a chance to tie it uup in the 86th minute when Kelly drilled a shot from a free kick, only to meet a diving Cerda to seal the victory for Wellesley.
"We talked about not letting our defensive mistakes turn into scoring opportunities for the other team, and that is exactly what happened on their two goals," head coach Susan Grant said afterwards. "In the second half we played more as a team and played better, unfortunately it just wasn't enough."
