NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard Academy freshman Phil Rogers has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week after winning the 174 pound weight class at the Wildcat Open at Johnson & Wales on Sunday.
Rogers went 4-0 en route to the championship. He pinned Thomas DiGennaro from LIU Post in 1:44, won by tech fall 17-0 over Wilfredo David from Bridgewater State and then earned another tech fall win over Ryan DeVivo from Johnson & Wales 18-2 for a spot in the semifinals where he pinned Michael Gargano, ranked second in New England, from Johnson & Wales in 6:22 to earn a spot in the championship match.
He is 13-4 on the season, a perfect 7-0 at 174 pounds with three pins and a record of 6-4 at 184 pounds also with three wins by fall.
The Bears, ranked 20th nationally are 7-2 in dual meets this season, are back in action on home on Saturday when they host Bridgewater State at 11 and NYU at 1:00.
