Bears Open Dual Schedule at Washington & Lee Duals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coast Guard opened up their 2017-18 duals schedule by going 2-1 at the Washington & Lee Duals, including a 17-15 victory over nationally ranked No. 24 Olivet.

Match 1: Ohio Norther 19*, Coast Guard Academy 18

In the battle of the bears to start the day, the Coast Guard Bears fell to the Ohio Northern Polar Bears 19-18 after a tie breaking criteria decided the match in favor of Ohio Northern.

After the Polar Bears took the opening match at 125, sophomore Owen McClave got the Bears on the board making fast work of Derek Dolph pinning him in 29 seconds giving Coast Guard a 6-3 lead.

Ohio Northern took the next two matches before senior Chris Sullivan squeaked out a 1-0 decision over Gavin Nelson tying the match at nine.

Once again the Polar Bears took two straight matches moving up by six again. Freshman Jon Wagner however brought Coast Guard right back at 184, pinning Cash Thompson in 7:25 and evening the score at 15.

The Polar Bears Alex Blair slipped by sophomore George McBurney at 197 giving them a three point lead going into the final match at 285. Sophomore Patrick Irwin brought the Bears back one more time to even, earning a 4-2 decision over Evan Hickey and tying the score at 18.

Ohio Northern however took the match 19-18 based on the first tie-breaker which was number of individual matches won (6-4).

Match 2: Coast Guard 17, Olivet 15

Coast Guard took advantage of their first opportunity against a ranked opponent by taking down No. 24 Olivet 17-15 with two late decisions by sophomore Kayne Roberts and Irwin.

After the two teams split the opening two matches (Olivet 125, Coast Guard 133), McClave earned his second victory of the day by tech. fall over Dean Roberts 19-3 giving the Bears an early 8-3 lead.

The Comets however went on a run after McClave's victory at 141 by winning four of the next five matches, only broken up by a 2-1 win by sophomore AJ Aeberli at 174 over Haydn Kinjorski.

With Olivet up 15-11, the Bears buckled down in the final two matches as Roberts took a 6-3 decision over Jacob Harvey and Irwin finished off the comeback victory with a 2-1 victory over Trevor Piggott, wrapping up Coast Guard first dual win of the season over the Comets.

Match 3: Coast Guard 39, Kings 9

In Coast Guard's final match of the day, the Bears won in convincing fashion over Kings 39-9 finishing up 2-1 at the Washington & Lee Duals. 

The Bears went eight straight to start the dual led by pins from sophomore Christian Gosch (6:22), Remke (2:07) and freshman Jessup Pawelczyk (3:40).

Coast Guard is back in action after the New Year when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on No. 19 WPI on January 10th. Matches will start at 7:00.
