Five of Nine Bears Advance to Day Two of NCAA Regional

BRISTOL, R.I. -- A trio of Coast Guard wrestlers won both matches to advance to the semifinals while two others are still alive in the consolation bracket following the first day of action at the Division III Northeast Wrestling Championship at Roger Williams.

Junior Chris Sullivan (157), sophomore Nick Remke (165) and senior Mike Palomba (174) will wrestle in the semifinals on Sunday, the second and final day while senior Matt McAllister (141) and classmate Phil Azzari (197) remain alive in the consolation bracket.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class earn a berth at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on March 10th and 11th in Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

Coast Guard, ranked 14th nationally, had a great opening round as the Bears won seven of nine matches to begin the championship.

McAllister opened by pinning Alex Starr from Western New England in 4:42.

Senior Matt Vieira earned an 11-1 major decision over Kearney Gutierrez from Springfield at 149 pounds.

Sullivan, ranked 5th nationally and second in New England, won by tech fall 16-0 over Austin Roche from Western New England at 157 pounds in one period.

Remke, ranked second in New England, earned a 7-1 decision at 165 pounds over Luke Anselmi from Williams.

Palomba at 174 pounds earned a 16-1 tech fall over Stephen Cerrone from Trinity with 2:50 left in the second period.

Senior Dan Fiorvanti won a thrilling 4-3 tie breaker decision at 184 pounds over Deuly Espinal from Cortland.

Azzari, ranked fifth in New England, won 3-2 decision at 197 over Sebastian Dziadkieiwcz from Williams.

The only two opening round losses were very close as senior Earl Roberts lost a 13-11 decision at 125 pounds and freshman Patrick Irwin  dropped an 8-7 decision at heavyweight.

In the consolation round one, Roberts earned a 3-1 decision at 125 over Daniel Murray from Rhode Island College while Irwin dropped an 8-3 decision at heavyweight.

In the quarterfinals, Sullivan, Remke and Palomba won to earn spots in the semifinals on Sunday.

Sullivan won on a 7-3 decision over Dan McBrinn from Johnson & Wales, ranked fifth in New England at 157 pounds while Remke earned 3-1 a decision over Evan Wallace from Oneonta.

Palomba, ranked fourth in New England,  earned a 9-7 sudden victory upset over Springfield's Geovanni Medina, the top ranked wrestler in New England at 174 pounds.

Also in the quarterfinals, McAllister dropped a 5-2 decision to  Zak Hale from Castleton, the top ranked wrestler at 141 in New England while Vieira lost a 12-4 decision to Dan Del Gallo from Southern Maine, the top ranked wrestler in New England at 149 pounds.

Fiorvanti dropped a 2-1 decision in a tie breaker to Dan Wensley from WPI at 184 and at 197 pounds Azzari lost a 2-1 tiebreaker to Khamri Thomas  from Johnson & Wales, who is ranked second in New England.

In consolation round two, McAllister earned a 8-2 decision over Roy Forys from Wesleyan and Azzari remained alive with a 6-4 decision over Peter Pjetri of Oneonta .

Brian Amato from WPI won by decision 5-3 over Roberts, Tyler Gazaway from Roger Williams won a 12-2 major decision over Vieira  and  Mitchell LaFalm of Castleon beat Fiorvanti 4-2 in sudden victory.
