Coast Guard Takes Two on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Bears climbed back to .500 on the year as they earned two victories over Bridgewater State and WPI on Saturday afternoon at the Coast Guard's Billard Gymnasium. 

Before the final say of the match, Coast Guard honore their three seniors: Kevin Painten, Holden Takahashi and Marc Wagner.

Coast Guard (4-5) 43 Bridgewater State (2-11) 9 

Coast Guard's match against Bridgewater started off with each side swapping forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds making the score 6-6 in the early going.

Freshman Adam Willhelm gave the Bears the lead back making quick work of Bridgewater's freshman Jacob Mullin-Bernstein pinning him in 44 seconds for a 12-6 Coast Guard lead.

Freshman Christian Gosch then tacked on to the Bears lead at 149 as he earned a major decision against sophomore Matt Jiampetti 10-0 making the score 16-6.

Sophomore Chris Sullivan, currently ranked third by the New England Wrestling Association, pinned freshman Declan Heaslip in 4:27 seconds pushing Coast Guard's lead to 22-6.

The falls continued for the Bears as junior Mike Palomba (02:07), junior Daniel Fiorvanti (01:17) and senior Marc Wagner (00:56) pinned junior Jason Gebara, junior Matt Provost and freshman Scott Spillert at 165, 174 and 184 respectively increasing Coast Guard's lead to 39-6. Palomba (165) and Fiorvanti (174) are currently ranked fifth by the NEWA.

Junior Phil Azzari, ranked sixth by the NEWA at 197, grabbed four more points for Coast Guard defeating junior Stephen Heaslip by major decision (17-4) making the score 43-6.

Freshman Thomas Aresenault claimed the final match for Bridgewater earning a 2-1 decision in overtime over senior Kevin Painten of Coast Guard wrapping up a 43-9 victory for the Bears.

Coast Guard (5-5) 24 WPI (13-9) 12

The Bears second match against WPI featured a combined 12 wrestlers ranked by the NEWA.

The Engineers jumped out to an early lead as junior Brian Amato (fifth in the NEWA) earned a decision against freshman Earl Roberts at 125 giving WPI an early 3-0 advantage.

After a forfeit at 133 in favor of WPI made the score 9-0, Coast Guard got on the board as junior Matt McCallister took the upset victory over freshman Pete Nash, ranked fifth at 141 by the NEWA, with a 9-4 decision bringing the score to 9-3.

Junior Matt Vieira swung the momentum back to the Bears at 149 as he pinned sophomore Matt Nigro in 4:17 tying the match at nine.

157 saw a battle of ranked opponents as Sullivan (third) grinded out a 8-1 decision against freshman Graysen DeLuca, fifth by the NEWA, for his second win of the day giving Coast Guard their first lead of the day at 12-9.

Senior Justin Marsh, ranked third by the NEWA at 165, tied the Match at 12 as he used a late take down to seal a 10-5 decision over Palomba (fifth).

Fiorvanti (fifth) put the Bears back on top with his second win of the day, an 8-5 decision over junior Lucas Muntz (ranked sixth by the NEWA) making the score 15-12.

Coast Guard increased their lead to six as Wagner earned his second win of the day with a upset victory over freshman Dan Wensley, ranked fifth by the NEWA at 184, putting the Bears up 18-12.

Azzari (sixth) sealed the win for the Bears with his second victory on the day, an 8-5 decision over freshman Michael Curtis (ranked fifth by the NEWA) giving Coast Guard a 21-12 advantage.

Sophomore Cory Tomasetti capped off the Bears second win of the day defeating freshman Austin Shrewsbury 8-4 putting the final touches on the 24-12 victory.

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, February 10th, when they travel to arch rival Merchant Marine for a midweek dual. First match is at 6:00 pm.
