Coast Guard falls at WPI
Worcester, Mass. - WPI won all seven contested matches in a 42-0 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) shutout of Coast Guard on Wednesday evening. With the loss Coast Guard falls to 4-10 on the season while WPI evens its overall record at 8-8 with the victory.
Coast Guard used the match to get some much needed experience to some of the younger wrestlers on the team. The match started with consecutive forfeits by Coast Guard in the 174 and 184 pound divisions to give WPI a 12-0 advantage before a match was contested.
Following a WPI victory by pin in 197, freshman Kevin Painten managed to record a point before eventually falling in the heavyweight division 5-1. After no contest at 125 pounds and a tech fall loss at 133, Coast Guard freshman James Hegge took part in the highest scoring match of the night before succumbing in the 141 pound division.
Freshman Holden Takahashi, after witnessing a major decision at 149 pounds before his match was able to keep the score relatively close at 157, before falling 8-1. The match concluded with a WPI victory by pin in the 165 pound division.
Coast Guard returns to action on Saturday, February 16th, as they host a quad-meet, welcoming Trinity College, Rhode Island College, and Bridgewater State University to the Academy.
