Nate Giorgio Places 2nd at All-Academy Championships
WEST POINT, N.Y.---Sophomore All-American Nate Giorgio placed second at 125 pounds at the All-Academy Championships host by Army. He was the only Division III wrestler to make a championship match in the tournament.
Coast Guard finished seventh of the eight teams while Navy won the championship by winning seven of the ten weight classes.
Giorgio, the top ranked Division III 125-pound wrestler nationally, beat Joaquin Marquez from the Citadel 5-4 in the semifinals before falling 6-0 to Josh Martinez from Air Force, the tournament's top seed at 125 pounds, in the championship match.
Mike Giorgio (141 pounds) lost 7-3 to Joe Locksmith from Navy before pinning Tyrell Carstarphen of Norwich in just 1:41. He then lost to Carter McElhany from Air Force 8-6.
Mark Howard, wrestling at heavyweight, won his opening match 8-5 over Michael LaPrade from VMI before being pinned in 38 seconds top-seed and eventual champion Odie Delaney from the Citadel. Howard then lost to Collin Wittmeyer of Army 4-0.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when the Bears host rival Merchant Marine at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, the Bears will host the youth wresters from Newtown, who will wrestle exhibition matches against the Waterford youth wrestlers.
