New London, Conn. – Roger Williams won six of the ten matches and improved their record to 2-1 on the season with a 25-12 victory over the Bears. In their first dual meet of the season, the Bears drop to 0-1.
The Hawks, ranked No. 23 in the nation according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, picked up wins from freshman Dan Roger (125 pounds), junior Conor Hayes (149), freshman Francisco Colom (157), junior Collin Crowell (165), senior Shane Parcel (184), and freshman David Welch (197).
For the Bears, sophomore Nate Giorgio, who is ranked No. 5 at 133 pounds according to the d3wrestle.com poll, beat sophomore Dante Porrazzo by decision, 6-1.
Freshman Thomas Porzillo defeated freshman Zach Daigle in the 149 pound match by a 4-0 decision.
"Roger Williams is having a great season," said Coast Guard head coach Steve Eldridge. "They are nationally and regionally ranked and it was a hard battle. Having no one for us at 125 pounds puts us behind the eight ball right off the bat, but we had a couple really good wins tonight as well. Their upper weights are real good and we battled them tough. Luke Taylor had a great win at 174. We bumped Marc Wagner up from 174 to 184 and he had an excellent match, but unfortunately he couldn't pull out the win. Overall, I'm very proud of the team and how we performed."
This was the last match of the semester for the Bears and will hit the mat again on January 11-12 when the travel to Lycoming College for the Budd Whitehill Duals.
