Shermot Wins 165 Class in Season-Opening Tournament
GRANTHAM, Pa.—Freshman Mike Shermot won the 165 pound weight class in his collegiate debut as Coast Guard placed sixth of nine teams at the Messiah Invitational.
Shermot, who was seeded third in the tournament, won all four matches posting wins by scores of 22-13, 12-7, 10-6 and 12-6 in the championship match.
Sophomore All-America Nate Giorgio, the top-seed in the tournament a 133 pounds, placed second. He started off with a pair of pins in 1:51 and 2:09 before a 7-6 decision gave him a spot in the final. Chad Lammer from Elizabethtown pinned Giorgio in 1:42 in the championship match.
Junior captain Luke Taylor placed third at 174 pounds as he won five of his six matches. Taylor started off winning by pin in 3:29 before losing 7-6. In the losers bracket, he pinned his first two opponents in 1:46 and 1:03 and then registered a 4-2 decision for a spot in the third place match where he won easily 14-4.
Sophomore Mike Giorgio placed fourth at 149 pounds as he won four matches. He won 17-1, 13-4 and 15-7 before being beat 8-6. Giorgio won 8-2 to get a spot in third place match where he was beaten 10-2.
Also for the Bears freshman Tom Porzillo won a pair of matches at 133 pounds in his first collegiate tournament while sophomore heavyweight Mark Howard picked up three wins in the tournamnent.
Coast Guard finished with 60.5 points while host Messiah won with 105 points.
