Giorgio Named Most Outstanding and Rookie of the Year

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.--(2/27/12)--Coast Guard Academy freshman Nate Giorgio was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and the Rookie of the Year at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships as he won the 125 pound weight class by winning all five matches.

Giorgio began the tournament with a pair of major decisions, 16-0 and 15-0 before recording his ninth pin of the season in 3:47 to earn a spot in the winners' bracket final.

He matched up against Brandon Gauthier from Rhode Island College, the defending champion, and beat him 4-1 to earn a spot in the championship match.

Gauthier came back out of the losers' bracket to face Giorgio again and Nate won 10-1 to win the championship.

Giorgio, who has been the #1 wrestler in New England at 125 pounds all season improved to 30-6 on the season and will now prepare for the NCAA Division III Championship at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on March 9th and 10th. The winner of every weight class at the New England Championships gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

He is the first New England champion from Coast Guard since Chris Fertig did it three straight years (1999-2001) at 165 pounds.

Coast Guard also won the Sportsmanship Award as a team.
