Bears Earn Program Record 10th Win with Victory Over Blue

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard broke open a one goal game at halftime outscoring Wellesley 10-4 in the second half to earn the programs first 10 win season in program history Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Bears improve to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC, while the Blue fall to 1-13 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

Senior Daria McKenna led Coast Guard with a game high six points on four goals and two assists. Freshman Marietta Davis was right behind McKenna scoring four goals and adding one assist while freshman Luisa Santos matched a career high with three goals. Freshmen Brenna Farrington and Haley McCue finished with two goal each.

Wellesley was led by Dacia Persky who had a team high four goals. Senior Jenny Gubner scored two goals while four other players had a goal for the Blue.

The Bears opened the game on a 6-2 run led by three goals from Davis and three assists from freshman Haley Howard capped off by the two players connecting at the 8:53 mark.

The Blue answered the early lead with a run of their own scoring four of the final five goals of the half including a goal from junior Mariana Hernandez with 12 seconds left in the half making the score 7-6 at the break.

Wellesley tied the game on a goal from freshman Carson Dennis with 28:52 on the clock to start the second half.

Coast Guard came charging back scoring five of next six goals pushing their lead back to four at 12-8.

After the Blue scored back-to-back goals to cut the Bears lead in half, Coast Guard closed the game out scoring the final five goals of the half for the 17-10 victory.

Freshman Rebecca Dolan (8-2) entered the game in the second half earning the victory making two saves and allowing four goals. Classmate Mary Budri started the game making three saves and allowing six goals.

Junior Chloe Tucker (1-13) made 11 saves allowing 17 goals for Wellesley.

McCue had a career high nine draw controls and a team high four ground balls while Santos and sophomore MegMarie Stanchi finished with three ground balls.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, April 21st, when they travel North to take on the Mt. Holyoke Lyons. Opening draw is noon.
