NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard dropped their season opener 14-3 to Eastern Connecticut Saturday morning at Cadet Memorial Field.
The Bears start off the season 0-1 while the Warriors are 1-0.
Coast Guard was led by freshman Lydia VanWinkle and juniors Cecelia Hosley and Niki Kirchner-Hope who each had a goal including VanWinkle's first collegiate goal. Sophomore Anne McGoldrick had the teams only assist.
Eastern was led by senior Paige Schneider who scored a game high four goals. Sophomore Michelina Pinto also recorded a hat trick with one assist. Junior Katie Burke tallied one goal with three assists.
The Bears were on the board first as Kirchner-Hope scored a free position shot with 24:32 left in the first half giving Coast Guard a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors however answered, scoring six straight goals. Schneider has three of her four goals over this stretch.
Hosley got one back for the Bears right before the end of the half as she took a pass from McGoldrick and fired it into the back of net with just over 2:30 to go in the opening stanza.
Eastern, however, started the second half with another run scoring the first seven goals putting the game out of reach and wrapping up their season opening victory.
Coast Guard was 13-22 on clears while the Warriors were a perfect 15-15. Turnovers were nearly even (E 20, C 21) but Eastern held an advantage in shots (30-7).
In her first appearance for the Bears senior Hannah Delguercio (1-0) made 11 saves allowing 14 goals.
Senior Taylor Emmerson (1-0) made four saves allowing three goals for the Warriors.
Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, February 28th, when they host Salve Regina in nonconference action. Opening draw is 7:00.
