NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Jessica Reilly scored with 45 second to go in the first overtime, leading Merchant Marine to a 10-9 victory over Coast Guard in the Bears final game of the season.
With the loss Coast Guard finishes the season 2-14 while the Mariners improve to 7-5 overall.
In her final game, senior Kaitlin Dickson had three goals and one assist while sophomore Cecelia Hosley had a career high four goals. Sophomore Daria McKenna scored the other two goals for the Bears. McKenna finishes the year with 18 goals and 20 points moving her into second in all- time career goals (26) and points (30).
Freshman Meredith Willard scored a game high five goals while classmate Maura Malone had a hat trick. Reilly had two goals including her game winner.
Coast Guard jumped out to an early 6-1 lead just under six minutes into the game led by three goals from Dickson.
The Mariners chipped away at the Bears lead towards the end of the first half scoring three of the final five goals, making the score 8-4 going into the final period.
Merchant Marine controlled the second half holding Coast Guard to one goal and netting five to tie the game at nine and force overtime.
With just under a minute left in the first overtime, Reilly curled around the right side of the Bears goal and fired a shot on goal giving the Mariners their first win over Coast Guard in women's lacrosse.
Sophomore Angel Fay (2-14) finishes the game with eight saves and allowed 10 goals. Fay ends the year with a NEWMAC leading 150 saves. She now has 277 saves for her career.
Freshman Hannah Gizzi notched 11 saves giving up nine goals, for her seventh win of the season (7-5).
Coast Guard returns the majority of their roster next season and will be looking to build on the valuable experience from this season.
