Pioneers Pull Away from Bears Late

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In their final New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the season, Coast Guard fell to Smith by a final score of 11-4.

With the loss the Bears fall to 2-13 on the season and 0-8 in the NEWMAC. The Pioneers improve to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Sophomore Daria McKenna scored her team leading 16th goal of the season while freshman Carter Sanderson also had a goal for her 12th on the year. Sophomores Cecelia Hosley and Mimi Coburn each had the other two goals for Coast Guard.

Freshman Katie Christensen scored a game high three goals while senior Ray Silveria registered three points of her own with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Caroline Myran and freshman Emily Biggs each had two goals for the Pioneers.

Smith came out and scored the first two goals of the game before the Bears were able to tie the score after goals by Sanderson on a free position shot and then an unassisted tally by McKenna with 18:51 to go in the first half.

The Pioneers managed to take a 4-2 lead going into halftime with Christensen scoring her second of the half and freshman Chloe Harris netting her first of the game.

Smith scored two quick goals to start the second half for a 6-2 lead before Hosley scored on a free position shot and Coburn scored her first of the season making the score 6-4 with just over 18 minutes to go in the game.

The Pioneers defense would lock down the Coast Guard offense the rest of the game and score five goals to end the second half for their first NEWMAC win of the season.

Sophomore Angel Fay (2-13) made 10 saves on 21 shots on goal allowing 11. Fay leads the NEWMAC with 142 saves on the season. In two year she has made 269 career saves.

Sophomore Sarah Price (4-8) stopped four of the 12 shots she faced allowing eight goals. Price is second in the conference with a 50.4 save percentage.

Before the start of the game seniors from both teams were honored, including Isabelle Patnode for Coast Guard. Thank you for your dedication to the women's lacrosse program.

Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, April 23rd when they host archrival Merchant Marine in their final game of the season. Game time is 6:00.
