Bears Varsity 8 Wins Head of the Housatonic

SHELTON, Conn. – The Bears Varsity 8, which won the Head of the Housatonic last year, defended their championship winning by 36 seconds.

The crew  was charged with defending their bow number, as they were the first crew on the course in their event after finishing first in the event last year.  The Bears charged down the course, rowing strong, clean, and composed.  They continued to draw away from the field over the 2.7 miles, ultimately finishing 36 seconds ahead of the second-place crew.

The lineup was:

8+ Collegiate Women (Non D1):

C – Victoria Castleberry

8 – Sarah Kukich

7 – Zoe Bolling

6 – Karisa Maurer

5 – Tess Heimerman

4 – Tara Strauss

3 – Hailey Thompson

2 – Mackenzy Karnehm

1 – Laura Beck

In the Varsity 4+ event, the 'A' boat chased down the two leading crews from Trinity while pulling away from the Williams College A boat.

Coast Guard gained on Trinity's leading crew, and ended with an impressive second-place finish in the event.  The 'B' four was comprised of all novices, and this four raced with great composure and technical skill for a novice crew. "I am very pleased with how well they executed on what they have been learning in practices and how they placed in a Varsity event, as they were able to keep up with the field and beat a Varsity crew," said head coach Jodi Hope.
