NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bears were finally able to open the season with a Varsity 8 race against Wesleyan.

The conditions were cold at 41 degrees, dropping to 38 degrees during racing, with a temperature feel of 30 degrees, and rain. There was an incoming tide and current, with a cross/head wind of 12mph.

The Bears were fast off the line, gaining a couple of seats on Wesleyan in the first 200 meters. The crews began to drift apart in the middle 1000, and Wesleyan gained the lead, holding that edge and extending the lead through the second 1000 and held on for the win.

Wesleyan crossed the finish line in 7:10.01 before the Bears finished in 7:29.35.

"This race was a good measure of where we are as a program currently, and the steps we need to take to continue to increase speed in the coming weeks," said Coast Guard head coach Jodi Hope. "Within our small squad, there is depth to draw from, and we will continue to look at the best pairings to make the fastest 8+ line-up, as well as continue to clean up the stroke and unify more as a boat."

The Bears Varsity 8 lineup for the race vs. Wesleyan was as follows:
