Bears Ranked 6th in National Preseason Poll

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/23/12)--The Coast Guard Academy women's crew team is ranked sixth nationally in CRCA/USRowing Coaches Preseason Poll released on Friday.

Coast Guard will be looking to challenge for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship and return to the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time since the 2008 season after coming up less than one second short last season.

The Bears Varsity 8 fell just short of winning NEWMAC Championship a year ago as Wellesley used a strong push over the final 500 meters to edge the Bears by a half a second. Wellesley won with a time of 7:11.6 edging the Bears time of 7:12.1. Wellesley is ranked third in the preseason poll.

The Bears top boat will be led by senior first team CRCA All-American Sarah Jane Otey and first team All-conference selection senior co-captain Holly Madden. The Varsity 8 will also feature senior co-captain Kelly Normoyle and senior coxswain Julianna Harvin.

The Bears Varsity 8 won the petite final at the New England Championships and took fourth in the petite final at the ECAC Championships to close out the Spring season a year ago before winning the head of the Housatonic in October to highlight the Fall season.
